Mitch BiersnerMeet our Staff:  Mitch Biersner

Mitch Biersner joined the staff of Main Street Waterloo as Marketing & Event Coordinator on April 7.  He's a Cedar Valley native, having graduated from Dike-New Hartford Community High School.  He attended The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., graduating in 2005 with a BA in American Studies and in 2007 with a Master's degree in Tourism Administration.  Through his studies at GWU, Mitch was able to study the Olympic Movement and attend the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy; conduct audience surveys at the 2006 Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, CA; and write a tourism planning case study on the Barn Quilts of Grundy County.

Previously, Mitch worked for four years at AARP's National Office as an Events Management Specialist.  He has also been involved with the AFI-Discovery Channel SilverDocs Documentary Festival and International Documentary Conference for six years.

Mitch has also been a member of the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) for four years.  In 2008 he received one of the PCMA Capital Chapter's Star of the Year Awards.  Meeting Professionals International (MPI) recognized him as an up-and-coming industry upstart affecting the face of meetings.  He was also selected to participate in the 2007 IMEX-MPI Future Leaders Forum in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

"I am excited for the opportunity to return to the Cedar Valley and join Main Street Waterloo in all of the work that the organization does on behalf of the community," he says.

ParForeThe'Loo Pub Crawl a Success!

More than 250 "golfers" swung their way around Downtown Waterloo on the evening of Saturday, April 17.  Participants enjoyed drink specials, putt putt golf holes, and themed games.  Women's low-scorer was Sheri Sigler; Men's low-scorer was Mark Card.  Both received a personal putting green, free admission tickets to the Grout Museum, a putter, and event t-shirt.  Winner of the "Best Bar" Award, as voted by the "golfers", was Club Fever (313 W. 5th Street).

We would like to thank all of our participating pubs who helped make the event a success!

Has your organization discussed starting an oral history project but doesn't know where to start?  Do you have seniors in the community who "carry the town's history" in their memory?  Do you want to enhance your community's history?  Is it finally time to capture the stories before they are lost forever?

If so, here is an opportunity to learn how to organize, implement, and utilize an oral history project from the staff of the Grout Museum who have conducted over 1,000 interviews.

Please contact Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area at 319-234-4567 or visit www.silosandsmokestacks.org for more information.
